This Week in Micro. Lab

I thought I would share with you some of the gross things I'm growing in my microbiology lab! Wait, don't go!

These are some bacteria colonies isolated from my pencil (various kinds of Staphylococcus):

This is some Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa grown on an EMB plate:

The black color of the E. coli means it's a lactose fermenter.

Moral of the story? Wash your hands after shaking hands with me! Actually, those Staph bacteria are part of the normal flora of your skin, so, nbd (no big deal).

This post reminds me of all my past micro labs... And how I DON'T miss all those stinky bacteria ;)

LOL

It reminds me, too, of past micro labs. I totally miss those days! I remember coming to my first lab with these gigantic fake, acrylic nails. (My sister was learning how to do it and experimented on me.) My professor got after me. We were using a serum with live E.coli in it and I went right home and removed those nails!

For my agar plate, I cultured the steering wheel in my car. Now that was GROSS.

That looks really fun! I'd love to know what bacterias are lurking around me. Or would I? Hrm. :)

A friend of mine took a parasite course where they brought in stool samples. He made photo stickers of the momentous occasion.

Gross! I was never a big science person, but it is pretty fascinating to see what's all over us. :)
